Arturo Flores Team US is Back to Basics

They never made a picturesque play or an incredible dribble, they never approached the referee to claim "it was an unfair call". They never doubted their teammates or shouted a negative remark. It was very simple; no mistakes passing the ball, or defending, and if they lost the ball, they got back in position and defended, finished the play and got back to their side of the field. Passing, Controlling, Pressing, Delaying the opponents game; it's all about basics. Good 'ol hard work, focus, stContinue

Arturo Flores Team work

Stephen Covey made it very simple for us to remember the principle of team work, he posted this quote from Henry Ford, as this can be applied to every relationship and activities in our lives. " Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success" -Henry Ford. In a sport like soccer at any level, working together translates in words of encouragement to your team mates, having a positive word of advice after a play did not work well, covering the space le… Continue

Arturo Flores Hydration

How much water should we consume to have proper hydration? I consulted a physical trainer and she recommended to drink half of your body weight in oz. of water; that is, if your weight is 150 lbs. you should be drinking 75 oz. of water throughout the day, every day. Continue

Arturo Flores The mental game

How much of the game is mental? I spoke to some professional coaches in the last few years and I asked them their perspective about the mental game, How much is mental and how much is physical? -one answer says it all. -When I get to a new team and I look at the players, I select the must focused, educated, dedicated and humble players, in and out of the field, the physical aspect is important but the attitude is extremely relevant, players can increase their speed or their technique but the pos… Continue

Jeff Chatter: Starting XI for US Men's National Team

Let's get the speculation going and plant the seeds for an argument that has no real official way to keep score.

What will be the US Men's National Team's predominant lineup throughout this summer's Confederations Cup (starts in June; USMNT is grouped with Italy, Brazil and Egypt!), throughout World Cup qualifying and (assuming USMNT makes it) at the beginning of the Copa Mundial, World Cup 2010 in South Afr

Jeff Rudi Y Cursi

Nick Green, 100 Percent Soccer blogger from DailyNews.com, offers a provacative review of the emerging Mexican futbol flick Rudo Y Cursi (rude and corny?) The bigger point Green makes is that this movie will stand our from other soccer fare in that it isn't cheesey, predictable, generalistic, or otherwise use soccer simply as a cultural symbol (hey- what's so bad about that?), and instead centers on an entertaining soccer narrative of

Jeff The Diverse Soccer Culture of Utah

Here's a great read from Maggie Thach of the Salt Lake Tribune on the diverse nationalities of youth soccer players in Salt Lake City. Its great context for a place that most Americans probably think of as extremely homogenous, but which is actually incredibly diverse.

Writes Thach, "Coach Eric Bliss said of his 20

Jeff Soccer in Harlem

A short but very telling post by Adam Spangler at This is American Soccer (sponsored by Nike) that illuminates the flavor of grassroots, world soccer right here in the US. FC Harlem is a youth program that is actively reaching out to the West African and other diverse communities that neighbor its Harlem roots. The quotes in this post (a note from Irv Smalls, FC Harlem head)

Jeff The Big Grass Snake

Some People Are On The Pitch has two old but hilarious posts about colorful nicknames of soccer clubs 'round the world:

Affectionate nicknames of world football clubs. Ex: Did you know that Inter is known as Il Biscione, or The Big Grass Snake? (You might have if you're Italian.) My favorite: the Beatles nod in Villareal's The Yellow Submarine. This list makes U.S. team names extremely dull in c

Jeff The Day That Soccer Died

The New York Times' Rob Hughes reports on the twentieth anniversary last week of "The Day That Soccer Died." Soccer fans, especially in Europe, refer to it only as "Hillsborough." 96 people were trampled to death at an English FA Cup Semifinal. The old style of British venue didn't help prevent deathly incidents like this; I never went to a British stadium in the 80s or 90s but as I… Continue

Jeff Soccer in Ghana: Give the Gift of a Soccer Ball

This article- depressing and inspiring at once- by Wright Thompson at ESPN was also an Outside the Lines special a few months back. Its another must read; it really explains the dire living situations in Ghana, and the desparation kids and parents have when a rare opportunity to use soccer as a "way out."

My take is that there is almost no way an American-raised kid can relate to the culture described in t

Jeff The Price of Local Soccer: A Bargain

Excellent article from David Williams of the Durango (Colorado) Herald on the true price of local soccer (leagues, camps, and other fees) for youth in Durango, Colorado. Durango has a pretty strong tradition in youth and high school soccer, and yet apparently there's been some backlash about the rising costs of participating. The central point is, despite the creeping costs… Continue

Jeff Must Read: How Soccer Explains The World

If you're looking for a good soccer read, the best book I've ever read is: How Soccer Explains the World by Franklin Foer In a nutshell, its a bunch of stories about cultural clashes all over the world, as reflected by intense rivalries by clubs in those nations (Celtic vs. Rangers as a metaphor for religious battles, Hakoah of the Austrian league as a surviving, purely Jewish club. Hooliganism is a theme and… Continue

Jeff Pro Teams Going Green

Here's an older story by Robert Andrew Powell of the NYTimes about how a U-23 minor league team in Boulder, Colorado, and an affiliate of the Colorado Rapids, went carbon neutral to stay in business. The Premier Development League team secured a sponsorship from Natural Habitat Adventures, an upscale Colorado eco-tourism company, and launched

MLS Grapevine: Sampson favorite to coach Chivas USA, MLS targets U-17 stars and more

Photo by ISIphotos.com On the eve of what could be the Los Angeles Galaxy's first MLS Cup title since 2005, the man who led LA to its last championship looks ready to return to MLS. Steve Sampson is on the verge of being hired by Chivas USA as head coach, sources have told SBI. Sampson would replace Preki, who took over as Toronto FC head coach. While Sampson is the favorite to be hired, sources have told SBI that Chivas USA is still conducting interviews with several coaches with MLS experience.
